TIPS FOR BEAUTIFUL DAHLIAS

Dahlias are great additions to any outdoor space and can be grown in both garden beds or large pots. Dahlias are frost tender plants and should be planted after the last frost date in your area, in a sunny position.

Plant dahlia tubers 10 to 15cm deep in well cultivated, free draining soil, ensuring the ‘eye’ or ‘neck ‘ is planted facing upwards. Incorporate sheep or cow manure or apply a balanced fertilser. Avoid fertilisers high in nitrogen as they will encourage more foliar growth and less flowers.

Do not water until shoots break through the soil. Dahlia tubers will hold well in the soil until they are ready to grow.

Staking is required for most dahlia varieties. Dahlia plants grown in beds can benefit from horizontal wire or netting support.

Deadheading / picking throughout the season will encourage more blooms.

If you live in areas with heavy clay soils or poor drainage we recommend lifting your dahlia tubers and storing them over winter.
